FAQ about Stump Grinders
A stump grinder is a machine used to remove tree stumps by grinding them into small wood chips. It features a rotating cutting wheel with hardened teeth that gradually shreds the stump—and sometimes part of the root system—below ground level.
Stump grinders are used after tree felling to remove the stump in order to restore the ground, prevent regrowth, or prepare the area for replanting, construction, or lawn installation.
Most stump grinders can cut 15 to 30 cm (6 to 12 inches) below ground level. This is usually sufficient to allow for replanting or surface-level landscaping without interference from the remaining stump.
The chips produced during grinding can be left on-site as mulch, composted, or removed depending on how the land will be used and customer preferences.
