  That -d model spindle is a so-called motor spindle, i.e. it has working lines connected to the tank line in the middle position:
  
  this allows, for example, the engine to rotate freely when the valve is put in the middle position, i.e. the engine can freely slow down from the speed of rotation. So you can imagine what happens if the engine rotates a 100kg disc that rotates at 500rpm and then it is slammed shut with one blow...there's quite a bit of rotating mass still on it, so it does quite a bit of damage if you try to stop it from full speed to zero once from the brake. i.e. a bit compared to putting the car in neutral and letting it slow down freely or then throwing it into gear from full speed, the result is pretty much the same.
